Highway 12 Road Trip: Suisun Marsh

Suisun Marsh, Spring 2014

This photo was taken near the first bridge on Grizzly Island Road, about one mile from the intersection of Highway 12.

Suisun Marsh is the largest saltwater marsh in the western U.S. Driving along Grizzly Island Road, which is the main road through the marsh, you’re likely to see flocks of great egrets, red winged black birds, avocets, a variety of ducks, and any number of small shorebirds. You’ll also see windmills. Big ones. Lots of them.

The road leads to the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area, managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. A permit is required to enter the Wildlife Area but can be obtained for $4.32 at the kiosk next to the road. The Wildlife Area is closed to the public at different times of the year, so check the CDFW website when planning your trip.

On the afternoon we visited, we saw numerous birds, turtles and a herd of tule elk but didn’t spot any river otters that make their home in the sloughs.

For more info about the Wildlife Area, including a self-guided tour, go here.
